The Ideal Winter Coat: Trench Coat vs Duster

Although some people hate winter because of the snow and low temperatures, there are others who really love every single thing about it, even taking long winter walks. But out of all these things, modern Aussies especially love the idea of wearing trendy coats. There is something catchy and somewhat enchanting about winter men coats, especially the trench and western duster coats. Since coats, in general, are an inevitable piece of every men’s wardrobe, these two types are a must-have for both, the rainy autumn and snowy winter days.

Trench Coats

The trench type of coat is a long waterproof coat which is usually made of gabardine, a tough and tightly woven fabric, perfect for the colder autumn and winter days. The term ‘trench coat” originates since the First World when this style of coat gained popularity amongst officers in the British armed forces. Although it’s not the ideal functional raincoat, trench coats are extremely stylish, and usually adorned with wide lapels and bigger decorative buttons. Whether worn by women or men, these types of coats usually have a belt.

Dusters

Another popular type of autumn coat is the western duster coat which sometimes is also referred to as a trench coat, however, they have little to no similarities. Generally speaking, the western duster coat types are usually made of oilskin which is a heavy waterproof fabric. This is due to the use of a hot solution of oil, gum and wax in order to ensure maximum protection under different weather conditions. Except by fisherman, these types of coats can also be worn by cowboys, workmen, motorcyclists, water-sport- enthusiasts and even by young children as it’s the perfect type of raincoat.

The classic look of duster coats features a detachable cape, adjustable drawstring, reinforced rear saddle gusset, and large fantail. Usually, these coats can have leg straps so the fabric could stay down around one’s legs. They also have a stand-up collar with a comfortable throat latch, adjustable cuff tabs and inside elbow patches.

To sum it all up, the main difference between these two is that trench coats are considered more stylish and fashionable, ideal for work or wearing on different events (both casual and formal). The duster types of coats, on the other hand, are more of a casual and everyday type of coats, and although they have the same knee or under knee length, both of them are totally different and designed for different purposes.
