The Ideal Lighting Sources for Nighttime Camping

Camping after dark has its own unique charm. The air feels quieter, the stars look sharper, and the campsite takes on a whole new personality. Still, once daylight fades, getting around without decent lighting can turn that peaceful vibe into a frustrating one.

The right illumination changes all of that. It helps you move around camp safely, sets a relaxed mood for evenings by the fire, and makes simple tasks far easier after sunset. From creating a warm, home-like glow to lighting paths and tents without flooding the campsite with harsh light, smart lighting choices add comfort without taking away from the outdoor experience.

Flexible LED Strip Lighting

From the wide range of LED camp lights to choose from, flexible LED strip lighting is one of the easiest ways to add practical and adaptable light to your campsite. You can run strips along awning arms, under a 180° or 270° awning, inside a tent, or even along the floor to help guide your way around camp at night. Many strips can be cut every 5 cm, which gives you a neat fit along awning arms or tight spaces without excess length getting in the way.

Look for LED camp lights with an included tri-colour dimmer so you can switch between three distinct light tones. Cool white offers maximum brightness and works well for cooking, setup, or pack down. Warm white still gives strong light but with a calmer feel that suits relaxed evenings. The orange light setting helps reduce bugs by up to 90 per cent, which makes it especially useful near food prep and eating areas. These strips illuminate large areas with ease and mount permanently under awnings, folding away with them for faster setup and pack down.

You can also find stick-on versions that adhere to gazebos, sheds, tents, and caravan awnings. They work like fairy lights, but with far more usable light for real campsite needs.

Portable Lanterns

Portable lanterns bring a familiar, camp-classic feel while providing dependable light where you need it most. There is no shortage of options, ranging from candle lanterns and LED models to gas or propane lanterns. Each suits a different camping style, so it helps to match the lantern to how and where you plan to use it.

Rechargeable LED lanterns are the most practical choice for most campsites. Many run on rechargeable power or triple-A batteries and can deliver up to 1000 lumens, which is enough to illuminate an entire site. For tent use, a softer output around 100 lumens works well, while 300 lumens is ideal for shared areas and camp tables. Gas or propane lanterns are another option if you already carry fuel for cooking, though they must stay outside and require proper ventilation for safety.

Candle lanterns offer a warm, natural glow that feels relaxed and cosy, ideal for evenings rather than tasks. Solar lanterns add convenience and portability, providing gentle light for tents or tables. Most of these options collapse or inflate for easy packing and even float, which makes them handy around camp.

Headlamps

Headlamps are one of those camping essentials you end up using far more than expected. They keep your hands free and shine light exactly where you are looking, which makes cooking, setting up a tent, or finding gear after dark much easier. Most fit snugly with an elastic strap and feel comfortable enough to wear around camp.

Look for a headlamp with adjustable brightness and beam options. Around 100 lumens works well for general camp use, but if you’re walking trails or need a proper LED camp light, go for above 400 lumens. It’s also a smart idea to prioritise water-resistant models made from high-quality, durable materials.

Torches

Torches or flashlights are a camping must-have. They act like a little magic wand, lighting your way and making moving around at night much easier. Modern LED torches are brighter, lighter, and more reliable than older bulbs, so you don’t have to carry something bulky or weak. For hanging inside the tent or reading, 30 to 40 lumens is plenty. If you want to light up the whole campsite or feel like you could spot a wandering critter in the bushes, flashlights over 3000 lumens will blast through the dark.

String Lights

String lights are a simple way to add both style and function to your campsite. They provide soft, ambient lighting that makes tents and common areas feel cosy and inviting.

Solar-powered string lights are a smart choice for eco-conscious campers. They charge during the day and switch on automatically at night. Waterproof models can handle unpredictable weather without a fuss.

LED fairy lights are small but pack a magical glow, perfect for wrapping around trees, tents, or picnic tables. For a bit of personality, colourful lights or string lights in mason jars can transform your campsite into a festive and welcoming space.
